History of Alabama

The History of Alabama tells that Alabama became a state of America in the year 1819. In the year 1702 the first European settlement at Alabama was made by the French at Fort Luis de la Mobile in the year 1702. The Spanish settlement at Alabama was made in the year 1519 at Mobile Bay. Hernando de Soto explored Alabama in 1540. Alabama is commonly known as “the Heart of Dixie” and “Cotton State” and also as the yellowhammer state. Alabama ranks 28th in size and the state of Alabama covers an area of 50,750 square miles.

The state bird of Alabama is Yellowhammer, The state flower of Alabama is Camellia, and the state tree of Alabama is Southern Longleaf Pine. Alabama became a state of America on December 14, 1819. The capital city of Alabama is Montgomery.

According to the history of Alabama, this land got the control of the British in 1763.
The population of Alabama had economic loss and had a great hardship due to American Civil War. In the year 1865, the slaves were freed in Alabama and after that period Alabama known as a poor and rural state. There were high tensions between the African Americans and the ruling whites. Alabama got prosperity after the World War II.

The economy of Alabama started to improve in the later half of 19th century with the help of industrialization. During the 1950s and 1960s Alabama has been the focal point of Civil Rights Actions.
