Monte Sano

Monte Sano is one of the major mountains of Alabama. The name of the mountain means “Mountain Of Health”. Monte Sano is situated near the Madison County and is very near to the city of Huntsville. Monte Sano is famous because it is a horse shoe shaped mountain. The surrounding of the mountain is very beautiful and a large number of people visit this place to have a look at the breathtaking beauty of the place.

The top of the Monte Sano is very flat. This mountain is just 500 meters above the sea level. The Tennessee Valley surrounds this mountain. The elevation of the mountain is just 300 meters higher than the valley. The Western part of the top of the mountain are occupies by the residents. The eastern part of the top of the mountain has the Monte Sano State Park. This state park has a huge collection of flora and fauna. The wildlife here is excellent and you will find a lot of endangered species. Some parts of the western slopes of the Monte Sano is owned by a trust which is into conservation of the forests.

The name Monte Sano is suggestive of the fact that there were various health resorts located on this mountain at one point of time which do not exist now. The mountain had various health resorts because of the cool temperature of the region, fresh air as well as clean water. Still now a large number of people visit this place in order to improve their health. Monte Sano is linked with another important mountain known as the Round Top Mountain with the help of a col towards the South.

Monte Sano is separated from the Plateau of Cumberland by the valley of the Flint River. Monte Sano is also known for the Sandstone caperock which overlies the soluble layers of the limestones of Mississippi. These limestones of the Mississippi are known for the marine fossils which includes blastiods and crinoids.
