Red Mountain

The Red Mountain is one of the important mountains in Alabama. The Red Mountain actually divides the Jones Valley and the Shades Valley in Alabama. This mountain is actually a ridge which runs between the northeast and the southwest of Alabama. This mountain is also a major part of the Appalachian Mountains especially of the Ridge and Valley Province. This mountain is known as the Red Mountain because it is made up of rust stained rocks and also of red hematite ore of iron.

The neighborhood of Red Mountain is one of the posh areas of Birmingham. Various rich people live here and a large number of estates are located here. One of the famous private schools of USA, the Altamont School is located here.

All the major radio and television centers of Alabama have their broadcast stations located here. A part of the Red Mountain was blasted in order to make the Red Mountain Expressway. This highway has been of great help to the people. It has connected Birmingham with Homewood, Vestavia Hills and Mountain Brook. When the mountain was blasted to make the highway, a large number of geological details about the region have also come forward. From here the geologists have come to know about the Silurian trilobite species as well as various fossils.

A new museum named the Red Mountain Museum was opened here in the year 1971. This museum has played an important part in the research of various paleontological items, fossils, vertebrates and invertebrates. A large number of fossils that was found here have been preserved in the museum.

In the later period a Children's Museum was also opened here. In order to make further developments here the region where the blasting for the Red Mountain Expressway was made has been made a National Natural Landmark.

Hope you have a nice time visiting the Red Mountain!
