Gulf of Mexico is the ninth largest water body in the world, teeming with a variety of sea life ranging from killer whales to deep water corals. As a matter of fact, the gulf of Mexico has a shoreline of about 3,400 miles that extends from Cape sable, Florida to the tip of Yucatan peninsula. The gulf is bordered by Florida, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana and Texas in the northern region; Mexico in the west and Cuban island in southeast.

In 2004, the governor of Florida had called for a action to protect and ameliorate the gulf of Mexico. This gulf is extremely important to the region because it connects the Atlantic Ocean to the Caribbean Sea vis the Yucatan channel between Mexico and Cuba. The deepest point of the gulf of Mexico is about 14,383 ft at the Sidsbee deep trough which was formed to prevent any further sea floor sinking.
The Mexican gulf has some very prominent and strikingly conspicuous features like-:
- Gulf of Mexico basin which enfolds the Sigsbee Deep which is further divided into the Sigsbee Abyssal Plain and the Mississippi Cone
- Northeast Gulf of Mexico that extends from the Mississippi Delta to the Apalachee Bay
- South Florida Continental Shelf and Slope
- Campeche Bank including the Arrecife Alacran
- Bay of Campeche
- Eastern Mexico Continental Shelf and Slope
- Northern Gulf of Mexico
Gulf of Mexico is considered to be North America's most economically productive water body holding a great deal of global significance in terms of the water it supplies as well as with regards to its contribution in increasing the tourism of the region. It goes without saying that the gulf of Mexico attracts thousands of tourists every year who are intrigued by its coastal beauty and magnificence that serves as one of the most spectacular tourist attractions in the gulf of Mexico.
