The pre-civil war mansions in Alabama, are in recent times have become the places of great tourist attraction in this region. All these mansions were constructed before the time when the economy of the state was destroyed due to the fierce Civil War of America. All these pre-civil war mansions in Alabama are characterized by quite developed architecture, decoration and modified equipments. All these houses had latest designs and innovation of that era. The plumbing system of those houses had facilities like running water, copper bathtub and toilets with flush system. Other modern features can be sited too, like: boiler for producing hot water, a gas stove, an early form of refrigerator consisting of a deep dry well in the basement that kept food fresh even in hot Alabama summers.

Most of these mansions were burnt down during the days of civil war. Later on, some of the mansions were reconstructed and all these places became centers of great tourist attraction in Alabama. These pre-civil war mansions in Alabama are providing the tourists the impression of existing in the same situation, like that of the period of the the great American Civil war. One of the most important mansion is the Jemison-Van de Graaff Mansion. Jemison-Van de Graaff Mansion was constructed between the years 1859-62. During the period of 1940s this place was purchased by J.P. and Nell Burchfield. From 1955 to 1979 the mansion functioned as the Friedman Public Library. When a new library at the Jack Warner Parkway was constructed, the this mansion became the home for two national publications, Antique Monthly and Horizon. Finally in the year 1991, this mansion was acquired by the Jemison-Van de Graaff Mansion Foundation and with spontaneous contribution from the general citizens, the process of carefully researching and restoring this beautiful and historic house to its original appearance was completed in a very harmonized way.
